Sakai / Jasig merger impact on incubation
Susan talked with Patty 9/15.Â
- Sakai projects somewhat nervous because prior effort within Sakai failed. It was very top down. However they are are also very hopeful and incubation is seen as a main attraction for the merger. (!)
- Licensing is likely to change - at least the name of the new foundation vs Jasig.Â
- There may be adjustments to incubation process to accommodate concerns or new aspects in Sakai projects.
- All existing projects will have to re-align with new criteria such as licensing, voting, governance. We are not forcing them all to go through incubation again but we do want all sponsored projects to comply with new criteria.
- Tom Barton has offered to help with transition of incubation process to new foundation. Concern over desire to engage more IT leaders to foster incubation and community.
- Possibly engage people higher up in organization to identify units of work and resources. Possibly a community of interest.
Jasig incubation is weakened by difficulty being effective in some areas:
- Finding right level of governance.
- Helping project create /Â build community
Susan email board and talk to Tom Barton about how / when to start the process of engaging Sakai in adjusting incubation process to accommodate their concerns.

Active discussions about registries as an outcome of initiative to do work to fill gaps in OS IDM landscape. Jeremy has been participating. This could be good news for long term sustainability of OR and for general health and activity of the project. |
||||
No work came out of the conference. Gary / Susan suggest recommending to board that this become an unsponsored contribution. Not sure if this makes sense since project id not housed in Jasig (I think). Need to explore what this would mean. |
||||
uMobile 1.0 GA this week. All requirements fulfilled except diverse community and adopters. No real harm in leaving to incubate until we have at least one adopter. |
||||
uMobile phase 2 will update NewsReader. Jen still intending to talk to Steve about combining. Comments, Steve? |
||||
Addressing issues on several fronts. Â Pete met with the university lawyers. Â On the surface the agreements don't seem to cause any problems but they need to check the existing NSF, USDA and Dept of Ed grants to make sure there are no problems. Â Hopefully done in the next two months but you know lawyers. |
||||
I asked Andy to contact Eric Dalquist about including the deployer portlet in uP4 |
||||
Added license headers to code, and added screen shots to project wiki. Â Waiting on shared CSS work to conclude build documentation. |

Hoping to cut the uMobile GA right after the uPortal GA. Once that is done it can graduate. All requirements fulfilled except diverse community and adopters. Maybe need adoption to graduate? |
||||
Jen suggests waiting a bit more and give us a chance to consolidate on one project. When Steve created his portlet, he wasn't aware of the simpler configuration options in the news reader portlet, and the news reader portlet is being distributed by default as of uPortal 4. Particularly since we're distributing an RSS reader with the portal, it'd probably be best to just get all the features we want into one portlet. There's really no technical reason to have two portlets, and Jen integrated in the few features that I saw in his portlet that were missing from the NRP. |

ThinkSpace wiki content was migrated to jasig (TSC).  Pete's doc staff have been busy on the site, and they will be having a discussion with faculty on Aug 3 to flesh out more of the documentation.  Pete is working on intro, scope and roadmap.  The phrase "federal grant funding" has introduced some additional churning in the approval of contrib agreements.  They are ready to commit code when that is resolved. |

Still no official release. RC2 and RC3 but ready for GA soon. |

Roadmap under construction and looking to connect to jira. Currently blocked from a 1.0 release by https://issues.jasig.org/browse/SA-1 pending on a release from Bedework. Project now has sponsor Gary Schwartz. Should governance be by Bedework? Susan talk to Gary. |
