Notes from Chat

WARNING – TitanPad was messing up name labels in the chat. Some name labels below may not be listing the right name... D'oh!

January 23, 2013
9:57 Matt Hertzog: howdy all
9:57 Alan Regan: Hi, all. Anyone receive conference dial-in info?
9:58 Matt Hertzog: I did but it's for London?
9:58 Alan Regan: From the drop-down, select your city.
9:58 Alan Regan: I selected Los Angeles.
9:59 Alan Regan: Also, from the web link for the "join online" portion, there is a "dial in number" link at the top right...
9:59 Patty Gertz: Or use skype to get in
10:00 Matt Hertzog: ugh...that's what I get for not reading more carefully
10:04 Gail Hunger: Matt: I also had to ask for clarification.
10:04 Amanda Cynkin: I am not Gail Hunger... strange...
10:09 Patrick Lynch: How about tracks for audience type?
10:10 Alan Regan: https://wiki.jasig.org/display/JCON/2013+Theme+and+track+descriptions
10:11 Patrick Lynch: Session types is good
10:12 Laura Gekeler: BOF / Tech Demo / Brainstorm / Strategy
10:12 Laura Gekeler: ?
10:12 Patrick Lynch: level can be good
10:12 Drew Wills: to me it seems "tracks by audience/role" and "tracks by project" are the two easy & clear divisions... but yet not sure they're the best
10:12 Gail Hunger: Faculty Development/Instructional Design/Developer Collaborations
10:13 Patrick Lynch: Faculty, ID & Support, Developer, Leadership & futures?
10:14 Amanda Cynkin: What about a track for users?
10:14 Patrick Lynch: users meaning who?
10:14 Gail Hunger: Leadership and Futures: How ID Leadership and Faculty Inform Design with Sakai Developers
10:14 Patty Gertz: Need to add new project - Student Success Plan, to the list
10:14 Amanda Cynkin: Do we need a track for end users? Or people who will be creating courses? Unless that is "ID". Does that stand for "Instructional Designers"?
10:15 Patrick Lynch: oh - user perspectives might be interesting
10:15 Patrick Lynch: yes
10:15 Aaron Zeckoski: maybe tracks are not the way to do it, maybe it should just be tags by project (e.g. uportal), type of person (e.g. system admin), and area of interest (e.g. getting started)
10:15 Patrick Lynch: we only had one student last year
10:15 Jim Helwig: Debbie, this link isn't working for me: https://www.concentra-cms.com/cfp/sessions/2012-jasig-sakai
10:15 Laura Gekeler: I include faculty in end users.
10:16 Jim Helwig: https://www.concentra-cms.com/cfp/sessions/2012-jasig-sakai
10:16 Laura Gekeler: many aren't "designers" or don't know that's what they should aspire to be!
10:17 Patty Gertz: yes, project is better
10:17 Gail Hunger: How faculty work together with designers at different institutions with Sakai development
10:18 Deb Smith: Debbie: CONCENTRA Site has been down this morning and Jenn is rebooting. Sorry for the inconvenience.
10:18 Laura Gekeler: The taxonomy is not just useful for people signing up for sessions, but also for the scheduling of the program,.
10:19 Aaron Zeckoski: same here, I think 30 mins should be enough
10:19 Jenn Cummings: Laura's comment about scheduling is right on. Thanks laura!
10:20 Gail Hunger UVa: I think 30 min presen and 15 q&a is great
10:20 Patrick Lynch: Type of session and time work together - a workshop may take longer than a straight presentation - but I do agree that shorter is better in general
10:20 Gail Hunger UVa: from last year's feedback, people love to connect. the time between sessions are good time for that.
10:21 Patrick Lynch: yep
10:21 Amanda Cynkin: i'm sorry, something has come up at work and i have to run. have a good call!
10:21 Laura Gekeler: Tags: "Workshop" "Tech Demo" "Leadership" "Strategy" "Pedagogy" ...
10:22 Amanda Cynkin: +1 to Gail's comment about people loving to connect
10:22 Patrick Lynch: we talked about some guidance for presenters last time
10:22 Amanda Cynkin: amanda c is actually Neal Caidin
10:23 Patrick Lynch: that makes great sense
10:23 Amanda Cynkin: We can put an Invisible fence around presenters and shock them if they don't follow the standards. ha ha
10:23 Alan Regan: :)
10:24 Patrick Lynch: Mandate and taser
10:24 Gail Hunger: Is it possible to have design and development on the teaching and learning part of the conference for coursesand instances of sakai at different institutions?
10:24 Jim Helwig: I am not sure I understand the question.
10:26 Gail Hunger: Looking at the previous conference titles, design and development was for tools in sakai; How could there be a discussion with how faculty implement design and development for teaching
10:27 Gail Hunger: I agree
10:28 Matt Hertzog: that woulod be in developers?
10:29 Laura Gekeler: Remember- a topic may not inherently be "technical" but the approach to the topic could be entirely technical or not.
10:29 Gail Hunger: This is along the lines of what I was stating
10:29 Laura Gekeler: Yes!
10:30 Laura Gekeler: And the current speaker.
10:30 Patrick Lynch: tech demo
10:30 Gail Hunger: Yes!
10:30 Gail Hunger: Right, it is in between the developer/technical, and how it is applied for faculty
10:31 Patrick Lynch: is that a mixed audience type then? It sounds valuable
10:32 Gail Hunger: Implementation
10:32 Patty Gertz: should we consider a Tips, Tools and Techniques track?
10:32 Jenn Cummings: Sounds like a "SIG" group?
10:33 Jenn Cummings: ^^Matt?
10:33 Alan Regan: "SIG"?
10:33 Gail Hunger: Here is how it can help your faculty teach in sakai
10:33 Jenn Cummings: Special Interest Group
10:33 Patty Gertz: Special Interest Group
10:33 Alan Regan: Thx
10:34 Gail Hunger: Yes, this would be great
10:34 Amanda Cynkin: Right, I don't think it is really an "SIG" - Neal
10:34 Patrick Lynch: 'Other'
10:35 Amanda Cynkin: Connecting developers with users...
10:35 Kelly Geng: is that a 'future star/new innovation' vs. 'widely used/current/mature'
10:35 Patrick Lynch: It sounds like it could be any of the suggestions
10:35 Patrick Lynch: which could confuse
10:36 Laura Gekeler: Faculty need more depth in what tools they use to accomplish what teaching goals.
10:36 Gail Hunger: Design and Development Implementation for Faculty Use
10:36 Laura Gekeler: The "how to use" needs more emphasis.
10:36 Matt Hertzog: what tools should be covered?
10:37 Laura Gekeler: Don't start with the tools, start with the teaching goals
10:37 Amanda Cynkin: +1 with Aaron (I'm agreeing with him far too much today) - Neal
10:37 Laura Gekeler: Student engagement methods
10:37 Laura Gekeler: for example
10:38 Amanda Cynkin: Yes, don't require folks to put themselves in a track...
10:38 Patrick Lynch: ++1
10:38 Amanda Cynkin: let's look at the proposals and tag it ourselves
10:38 Amanda Cynkin: -- Neal
10:39 Patty Gertz: tags need to be displayed on the program that people actually use at the conference
10:39 Amanda Cynkin: Nuke that tracks! -- neal
10:39 Laura Gekeler: Nuke the tracks. ++1.
10:39 Amanda Cynkin: Just provide an overall theme and purpose for the conference and let the proposers go wild! - neal
10:42 Gail Hunger: Yes, developer and user (which is faculty)
10:46 Patrick Lynch: How about tracks = audience, include mixed. All other details are tags
10:49 Kelly Geng: +1 Aaron's suggestion. Tags can emerge natually after the proposals come in.
10:50 Amanda Cynkin: It does create more work for us. Hopefully that will help make more connections for users and a great conference experience. -- neal
10:50 Amanda Cynkin: We will have to have a higher level of communication among ourselves to make this work -- neal
10:51 Kelly Geng: Neal, you need to change the name on the top of the chat to make it the real you.
10:51 Gail Hunger: Connection between Instructional Technologist and Sakai Developer as they work with Faculty
10:52 Kelly Geng: Or create some tag cloud for submitters to select
10:54 Patrick Lynch: Using | Developing | Other
10:55 Laura Gekeler: Managing Sakai? Optimizing Sakai?
10:56 Jim Helwig: Using | Developing | Managing
10:57 Patrick Lynch: good point
10:58 Kelly Geng: i'm ok too
10:58 Matt Hertzog: sounds fine to me
10:58 Jason Smith: other is good
10:59 Patty Gertz: agree with Jenn, and also with categories
10:59 Kelly Geng: can they submit keywords/tag to guide our later categorizing?
10:59 Jenn Cummings: Kelly, yes I believe that will be part of the submission, labeled "types"
11:00 Alan Regan: https://wiki.jasig.org/display/JCON/2013+Theme+and+track+descriptions
11:01 Kelly Geng: checkbox is great
11:03 Patrick Lynch: is good
11:03 Natalie Boivin: no objection here
11:03 Kelly Geng: sounds good to me
11:04 Deb Smith: Does anyone know if we have an Apereo logo? How about Track Theme and conference logo.
11:11 Patty Gertz: I think you can believe the Board has blessed the theme
11:12 Patrick Lynch: I need to run. Bye now
11:12 Alan Regan: Thanks, Patrick!
11:12 Jenn Cummings: Patty, can you check with Board on theme?
11:12 Jenn Cummings: oh, never mind.
11:13 Matt Hertzog: I've got to run to another meeting t...thanks all and have a good remainder of the week
11:14 Kelly Geng: bye!
