Dear Apereo and open source communities,

We are very excited to announce our first keynote for June’s Open Apereo 2013 in San Diego, CA:

"Challenges, Encouragement, and Women in IT - Does it Matter?"
by Theresa Rowe, Chief Information Officer, Oakland University

There's much in the news about women seeking successful careers in IT.  We read about the lack of young women choosing computer science as a major, at a time when we need more graduates in technical fields.  The news tells us about the challenges women face in technology careers, such as the Adria Richards incident at PyCon.  Finally, Sheryl Sandberg has started a national conversation with her book Lean In:  Women, Work and the Will to Lead .   What are the challenges facing women seeking careers in information technology?  What can we do about it, together?  And does it matter?  Let's explore our roles in attracting and retaining the best talent to our profession - male or female.

Theresa Rowe is currently the Chief Information officer at Oakland University, a position she has held since 2002. Rowe has been at Oakland University since 1990, where she has served as a Senior Systems Analyst, the Manager of Student Information Systems and Director of Information Systems before stepping into her current role. Rowe is active with EDUCAUSE and other organizations focused on technology in higher education. Some of her project experience includes creating a ten year network plan, upgrading data-center facilities, implementation of two ERP systems, and implementing an open-source portal. She has a lot of experience and insight to share!

Come to Open Apereo 2013 to learn from Theresa Rowe and many of your peers in higher education.

Please join us in Opening Minds to Open Solutions!

Sincerely,

Ian Dolphin, Executive Director, Apereo Foundation

http://conference.apereo.org #apereo13

Dear Apereo and Open Source Communities,

Don't forget to register for the Apereo conference and reserve your hotel rooms today, Friday, May 3 by midnight US Pacific Time! This is the last day to secure your early bird discount for our annual summer conference. And we've got an amazing line-up of presentations as well as interactive events!

  • Two Great Keynotes: We're excited to share that our second keynote speaker is Marilyn McMillan, Vice President for Information Technology and Chief Information Technology Officer at New York University. She will be speaking about "Openness and the 21st Century University."  McMillan joins our other keynote speaker, Theresa Rowe, Chief Information Officer of Oakland University, who will be talking about "Challenges, Encouragement, and Women in IT - Does it Matter?"  Don't miss these great presenters!
  • Amazing Program: We have a robust program filled with over 100 presentations by over 150 speakers representing more than 60 organizations from around the globe!
  • Networking Cafe and Collaboration Time: You asked for it in your evaluation feedback and we responded. We've carved out time for you to network and collaborate during the conference. On Monday afternoon there will be an exciting round-robin Networking Cafe where you can find and meet like-minded attendees to share ideas and work together on common issues. On Wednesday afternoon we've cleared the deck after lunch so you can break away and work together on projects.
  • Lightning Talks: There will be several opportunities for YOU to share your insights and best practices using Apereo and open source solutions. On Tuesday and Wednesday, in the late afternoon, there will be open spaces for short 5-7 minute lightning talks. We'll have a room dedicated to "teaching" and a room dedicated to "developing." Sign-ups will be at the conference and open to all!
  • Project Talks: On Monday morning, we'll offer a series of quick project talks. If you are new to Apereo, these sessions will offer a quick overview of each of the major projects, what they are about, and how you can benefit and get involved.
  • Collaboration Space: Each year we offer a dedicated room for collaboration. This room will be open throughout the conference for drop-in work. After an exciting presentation, keep the momentum going! Jump into the collaboration room and knock out a project plan, whip up that code, and compete with your peers on the fastest check-ins!
  • Social Events: For this year’s conference, we are planning a number of social events that will let you get to know other attendees in a fun and casual setting.  Some of these events have a limited capacity and are offered on a "first come, first served" basis. Many have deadlines to sign-up by May 27, so we encourage you to visit the social events page for details, and then sign-up for an event as soon as you've registered for the conference.
  • Pre-Conference Workshops: There are many great opportunities to dive into specific projects to gain in-depth knowledge about launching and using popular solutions like Sakai, uPortal, eportfolios, CAS, uMobile, portlets, and Grouper. Several of the workshops are free, so don't miss this opportunity!
  • And it's in sunny, beautiful San Diego, California!

Whether you're an educator, developer, administrator, instructional designer, support specialist, or just a technology enthusiast – there's something for everyone at this year's conference!

Please join us in Opening Minds to Open Solutions!

CONFERENCE PROGRAM AND MOBILE EXPERIENCE

For this year’s Open Apereo conference, we are using Lanyrd to share information about all the sessions and activities going on at the conference. Lanyrd.com aims to help you get more out of the conference - by finding the right sessions to attend, meeting the right people there, and catching up on slides, notes and video afterwards. Lanyrd is also a community-driven site where anyone can add events and improve existing listings.

In addition to a great desktop experience, Lanyrd is also the mobile app for the conference (see lanyrd.com/mobile). It will keep you updated on the schedule, speakers, and list of other attendees, and will let you build and see your own personal schedule for the conference. Lanyrd stores information about your events locally on your mobile device, so even if you are without a decent network connection you can still get what you need.

Here are the Lanyrd links for the Open Apereo 2013 conference:
Desktop:
lanyrd.com/2013/apereo or lanyrd.com/cpkyk
Mobile:
m.lanyrd.com/2013/apereo

Please explore the schedule, speakers, and other information before the conference to help plan what you want to see and who you want to meet. Be sure to create and account (presenters can 'claim' the account that has already been created for them), log in, indicate that you are attending the conference, and build your own personal schedule for the conference. Then, be sure to start using it on your mobile device and sync the event locally so you can always get to it. Please email us at support@apereo.org if you have any questions or problems with the Apereo event on Lanyrd.

NETWORKING OPPORTUNITIES

New this year will be the Networking Cafe event Monday afternoon. This is three mini-networking events wrapped into one, complete with delicious snacks, coffee and other drinks. How sweet it is! Don't miss this opportunity on the first day of the conference to meet new friends and connect with old friends around topics of mutual interest and curiosity.

We also have two ad-hoc rooms available for BOF sessions and other meetings during the conference (Balboa and Lindbergh). You can create meetings for those rooms directly in Lanyrd. Just look for the “Add a new session” link and select one of those two rooms as the location. Please make sure there is not already something schedule at the same time in the same location.

OPEN LIGHTNING TALKS

This year, we will have an opportunity for any conference attendee to share their valuable tips and information with the community. On Tuesday and Wednesday afternoons there will be concurrent "Teaching" and "Developing" lightning talks. There will be seven spaces in each event for quick, fun, five-minute presentations. Is there a common mistake that people make, a little known feature, or something unique that you developed at your institution? Share it! Sign ups will be on-site at the registration desk.

TWITTER
If you use twitter, please use #apereo13 to tag all of your tweets related to the conference so everyone can see what you're tweeting about.

INTERNET
Wireless Internet access will be available throughout the conference space. Internet in the guest rooms is included in the room rate for all Open Apereo attendees staying at the Westin. Please be aware that there will NOT be any computer kiosks for attendees to use at this conference so you will want to bring along a laptop or other wireless-enabled device if you need to stay online during the conference. To access the internet on the meeting room space floors: 1) Connect to the wireless network named “Westin Conference”, 2) Open Internet Browser, 3) When prompted, enter access code: ape717693

SOCIAL EVENTS
We have planned a number of social events so you can get to know other attendees in a fun and casual setting.  Event registration details are available on the social events page at http://conf2013.apereo.org/events (see page bottom to register).  Note that some events have limited space and are filling fast.  Sign-up now to ensure your spot!  And, don’t forget to bring a shirt to wear during the day Wednesday that bears your institution’s symbol and/or colors.

CONFERENCE EVALUATION
This year the Overall Conference Evaluation will be online and available immediately following the conference. We strongly encourage you to fill out the survey so that we can continue to improve the Open Apereo experience.

You'll be happy to know that the dress code is casual - jeans and sneakers are just fine!

We hope that your trip to San Diego goes smoothly. The Registration Desk will be staffed for the duration of the meeting so, should you have questions, please feel free to stop by and ask!
