Calendar in Portal

This was a meeting to discuss approaches for integrating calendaring and scheduling data within the portal. We also presented Rutgers "Calendar Summary" approach, and worked towards build consensus for community development efforts in this space.

Current State

Lots of schools have expressed interset in getting calendar data into the portal, though not much has resulted from it in terms of a downloadable solution. Few institutions have only one source for calendaring and event information.

Rutgers Experiences

  • Key: separate consuming events from generating

  • iCal for domain model & interchange format

  • Aggregating multiple calendaring systems

    • we didn't want to build another event silo backend

Near Term

  • Aggregate calendars

  • Grid view (weekly)

  • Reconciliation

  • Directory, tagging, catalog of calendars

  • "Starred" events in a virtual view?

    • requires backing store?

    • share calendars with others?

  • send this event to others feature, suggest attendance to others

  • attending vs. watching model, advertise where you're going

  • trigger alerts based on calendar events or bits

  • copy events into an activc queue (google star)
