RHEL

RedHat Enterprise Linux

RHEL ships with a placeholder implementation of java. You must install a "real" JVM to run uPortal. A bug has been filed with Sun against the RPM they distribute about updating the symlinks in /etc/alternatives.

As root, you can also issue /usr/sbin/alternatives --config java and run through an interactive session to fix the symlinks. Another option is to put the path of the java binaries at the front of your $PATH environment variable.

AS 3 Specific Information

You should ensure that you are running that latest kernel available from RedHat Network as some of the early kernels that came with AS 3 did very poorly with threading issues.

AS 4 Specific Information

The IBM JDK version 1.4.2.x is available through the RedHat Network in the Extras channel.
