User Administration Portlet
User administration UX improvements in the 4.0.x codebase
Screenshots
The above screenshots show two slightly different versions of the user-manager/selectUserAction.jsp and some improvements to the person-lookup/personLookup.jsp screens. The main improvement is that the layout is consistent with other portlets in the Adminstration area.
Simplifying the form from multiple text fields to one searchbox will require changes to how the user database is searched.
From talking with the experts, here are some useful things I have gleaned about searching for users (followed by a proposed solution in the form of a rough prototype):
The vast majority (99 out of 100) of use cases involve searching against only ONE field, however we still need to somehow maintain the ability to search multiple fields for when you need it
The most common fields across all use cases is username and email
The labels are 100% dependent on the deployer's user data sources (i.e. no need to have "alternateEmailAddress alternateEmailAddress")
One idea for the labels is to utilize message.properties to set "prettier" versions
Having a general field search through all attributes would be too taxing due to the slothfulness of LDAP
Showing a field for every attribute on screen is 1) overwhelming and 2) pushes the results too far down the page
You can use wildcards when searching i.e. a* (anything that starts with "a")
Considering these things, here is a possible solution to consider (it's not fully working, but you get the idea):
