2008-2009 ISU
Schedule
Sep 29: a discussion on problem-solving assessment. This will be a working session, rather than listening to a presentation, and we will be breaking into small groups to brainstorm and assess pros/cons of different options of assessing problem-solving skills.
Dec 1, Lori Brunner and Peter Sherman are co-teaching a course at ISU with students in interior design and aerospace engineering. They will share their experience of what happens when teams are formed from different disciplines to work on problems that require broader knowledge and different perspectives. Many (if not all) of our students will work in multi-disciplinary teams in their jobs, yet we at ISU (by our course structure) mainly prepare our students to solve problems within one area or from one perspective at a time.
Jan 27, Craig Ogilvie “Student motivation and engagement in developing broader skills, e.g. problem-solving”: getting student buy-in about the purpose of higher education is key to our efforts in improving student broader skills.
April 14, Veronica Dark on cognitive load issues that we should take into account when we challenge students with solving complex problems
