1 Upcoming Events
1.1 Portal 2009 - Gettysburg, Pennsylvania (June 2-5, 2009)
"The featured keynote speaker at Portal2009 is Richard N. Katz, Vice President of EDUCAUSE, and author, co-author, or editor of dozens of books, monographs and articles on a variety of higher education, management, and technology topics. His book, Web Portals and Higher Education: Technologies to Make IT Personal, published in 2002 is still considered one of the definitive sources on portals in higher education. We expect portal 2009 to be the best conference to date, so get your presentation proposals in to share your portal stories with your colleagues from higher education institutions from around the globe.
The theme for the conference, portal2009: users uses usability, is meant to reflect the idea that portals have many definitions, and the different portals have different audiences (users), tools (uses) and interfaces (usability). The more everyone knows about the differences, the more people can continue to evolve their institution's portal into a more useful commodity."

2.2.3 Call for Portlet Release Engineer
The Incubation Working Group recently accepted over a dozen portlets into the incubation process. The uPortal Steering Committee is looking for a volunteer to serve as a portlet release engineer. This person will help coordinate the testing and release of the portlets. They would work in cooperation with the lead portlet developers. If you are interested in taking on this role, please contact the steering committee at uportal-steering-committee@lists.ja-sig.org.
2.2.4 Steering Committee Elections
The uPortal Steering Committee serves as the governing body responsible for the strategic direction and operational oversight of the uPortal project. The committee acts as an advocate for the project and helps to ensure its continued health and growth. Later this Spring, the Jasig membership will elect individuals to serve as stakeholder representatives on the committee. As committee members, these individuals will help guide the ongoing development and adoption of uPortal and its bundled portlets. They help gather requirements, monitor progress and work on other initiatives that help improve uPortal and the community. You can find more information about the committee at http://www.jasig.org/uportal/steering-committee. We are particularly interested in having more end-user representation on the steering committee - you don't have to be overly technical to serve! Stay tuned for more information on the nomination process.
2.2.5 Portal Administrative Portlet
Unicon's Cooperative Support team continues to work on UP-2047 (http://www.ja-sig.org/issues/browse/UP-2047), the creation of a portal administration portlet; please check out the working initial version of the new portlet in the uPortal trunk. Since the last contribution, they have fixed several bugs, integrated features added to CChannelManager as of the 3.1 release, and added support for internationalization. Currently, they are laying the back-end groundwork for the new portlet lifecycle changes described at http://www.ja-sig.org/wiki/display/UPC/Portlet+Lifecycle. This work includes modernizing the channel persistence implementation to use JPA and Hibernate, which should allow us to eliminate a large amount of legacy code. Watch the email list for updates and contributions!
