This manual page articulates policy that has not yet been adopted by the uPortal project, under discussion in the uPortal Project Steering Committee and among the uPortal developers. Your input and comments are, as always, welcome.
Supported browsers
uPortal 3 supports:
- Apple Safari
- Microsoft Internet Explorer 5.5 and later
- Mozilla Firefox
What does it mean for the uPortal project to support particular web browsers?
This page is for documenting which web browsers the uPortal project intends to support. Defects in out of the box support for these particular browsers will be regarded as project software defects and patches to resolve any such problems will be welcomed.
The uPortal project requires that new channels and portlets proposed for inclusion in the core release deliverables also support these browsers.
Interest in and development to extend support beyond these core browsers is also welcome, but is a project scope increase for which a little more discussion is warranted. Contrastingly, development to improve support for a supported web browser will require less discussion – defects of support for named browsers are outright bugs. This is what it means for the uPortal project to support particular browsers.
It should be noted that in principle uPortal can support any web browser. With customization to the theme and skin, with attention and efforts, it should be quite possible for you to make your local deployment of uPortal support any browser you care for.
So if I have a problem with uPortal on some other browser, you don't want to hear about it?
No! The project welcomes any defect report you'd like to raise. What differs between supported and unsupported browsers is project commitment to do anything about it. If you have passion for making uPortal work great on Opera, please, do.
