uPortal 3.0 requires a Java 5.0 JDK or later. Due to use of JSPs which require compilation at runtime a JRE (Java Runtime Environment) is not sufficient, a JDK (Java Development Kit) must be used. Most deployments are utilizing the Sun JVM on a variety of platforms, though a number of people have reported success with the IBM JVM, BEA JRocket, and others.
