This page is where you can find information on fun activities in and around San Diego. Please add new activities that you think others would be interested in!

Biking

There may be an opportunity to rent bikes and have them delivered to the hotel. Stay tuned!

One of San Diego's best road riding opportunities is the Gran Fondo San Diego. Right before the start of the conference!

  • Rental: You can arrange for a rental bike (and helmet) to be delivered to the hotel for your use during the conference.  To arrange this call San Diego Bike Tours at 619-238-24444.  They will help you arrange for the right size and style (hybrid, road bike or mountain bike) and accept a credit card to reserve it for the period you want.
  • Route: From the hotel the best route is to take Fashion Valley Rd to Friar Rd.  Turn left on Friar and follow that about 2 1/4 miles to the bay where you can enjoy the bike trails around Mission Bay Park.  See lots of info here.
  • Company: ~susan.bramhall@yale.edu plans to rent a bike and hopes to make an early morning 10 mile circuit before breakfast and would be happy to have company.
  • If you want to roll your own adventure here is a good map of bike routes around the city.

Running

The Jasig Runners will continue their regular tradition of fun, low key runs. Bring your running shoes and join us! Runners of all abilities are welcome.

At this point we are thinking there may be a group run immediately following the final session on Tuesday. We aim to get back in time to join in the Dine-Around. Showers optional. We will post a route soon.

If you are interested in early morning runs as well, please list your name below to try and coordinate with a partner.

General Running Links

Suggested Routes for Jasig Attendees
All of the routes listed below start at the corner of Fashion Valley Road and Friars Road, a couple of blocks north of the hotel grounds. The first 3k are along Friars road, which appears to have good sidewalk, separated from vehicular traffic by bike lanes.

  • Ocean Beach
Down the south side of the river channel to Ocean Beach where you can find interesting people and bathrooms.
  • Mission Bay
Around the east side of Mission Bay on a bike path. Bathrooms and water every half mile or so. It's shared with bikes and rollerbladers but not to crowded.
  • River Channel North or this
Straight down the flood channel to the Mission Bay inlet. It's nice and flat but the last part by Quvira Way isn't that scenic.

Surfing

There may be an opportunity to planning a surfing outing if enough people are interested. I (Mark Diggory) live in Carlsbad and have a friend in Encinitas that owns a Surf Shop and runs a Surf School. Find out more at (http://www.dawnpatrolsurf.net/) If your interested please contact me (mdiggory@atmire.com). Current estimates are that it might cost around $50 per person (wet suit and surfboard included).

Hiking

There is a park with trails about 3 miles from the hotel called Tecolote Natural Park .  A nature walk Sunday Mar 7th at 9:00 AM leaves from the Tecolote Nature Center.  More Info here.  This could be a possibility for people attending afternoon seminars.  The Mission Trails Park, eight miles northeast of downtown San Diego is one of the largest urban parks in the United States.  Many other possibilities are described on the city's parks and recreation site.

Kayaking

Aqua Adventures is located less then six miles from the hotel. They rent Kayaks for as low as $15 for one hour. You can contact Aqua Adventures at (800) 269-7792 or at their website below. They are open 9:00am-6:00pm Tuesday - Friday, 9:00am-5:00pm Saturday & Sunday and Closed Mondays.
