Enabling Open Source: Advocacy vs. Assessment

In conjunction with Jasig's upcoming conference, "Spotlight on Open Source" the 2-3-98 Project will be holding a virtual track on Tuesday, May 24, 2011. Discussions around open initiatives, and open source particularly, often imply advocacy versus assessment. That is, those offering open source options are often identified as "open source advocates," promoting the use of open options, rather than considering alternatives solutions for assessment.

The 2-3-98 Project is devoted to a continual dialogue around openness: what is it, how does it work and does is provide benefit in the development and management of initiatives. Thus 2-3-98 Project track welcomes presentations offering a "business case" for open initiatives (both successful and unsuccessful), approaches around: discovery, assessment, implementation and management.

Topics (questions) of interest include:

  • Barriers to open initiatives: What are the realities and myths with open source or other open initiatives?
  • Due diligence in assessment: What criteria and metrics are required in the evaluation open options?
  • Developing communities of interest: How does your project find and cultivate contributors and users?
  • Governance models for open projects: How are decisions made within and for your open project?
  • That didn't work: Why did your deployment fail?
  • Other: hey, we're open to other issues...

Previous 2-3-98 Conference planning can be found at SUNY Delhi.

Regional Hosts

As this track will be presented online, the 2-3-98 Project is interested in organizing face-to-face networking through regional meetings. Regional meetings can be hosted by any organization and are great opportunity to meet with local communities of practice, like-minded individuals, build partnerships and network. Regional meetings can also provide technical support for presenters, sharing (and thus reducing) costs for webcast technologies. Any organization wishing to host a regional meeting for the 2-3-98 Project track, should add their contact information as a comment to this page (see the "Add Comment" link at the bottom of this page).
