1. If supporting multiple data formats, should be able to do it automatically (and not have to reimplement)
   1. If that results in "bad" XML then it's perhaps better to not use XML
2. Effort required to support multiple approaches
3. REST doesn't deal with (eg) multiplicity of identifiers well
4. Consensus on call seems to be POJ (plain-old-JSON over HTTP) without calling it REST, derived programmatically from an object model
